Every year on April 9, the United States of America celebrates the National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day. This day honors American veterans who returned to their homeland after being released from captivity.

The date April 9 was chosen to commemorate the defeat at the Battle of Bataan in the Philippines in 1942, after which thousands of American soldiers were taken prisoner by the Japanese.
